China Lakes at Les Kaolins is ideally located in the Southern Brittany department of Morbihan, 10 – 15 minutes drive from the picturesque market towns of Scaër, Le Faouët and Quimperelé. However if you want a break from the fishing and a day out there are many interesting places to visit not too far away.
Pont-Aven is approximately a 40minute drive from China Lakes. It is best known for its association with the post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin. This attractive little village also has some lovely riverside walks, a mouth-watering food speciality and a colourful summer festival.
Pont-Aven has some very nice clothes and food shops and no visit would be complete without buying some galettes from Biscuiterie Traou Mad, where these butter biscuits (not pancakes) were invented in 1920.
The village is particularly lively on 1 August when the Fête des Fleurs d’Ajoncs (gorse flower festival) takes place; there’s Breton music and dancing plus regional food specialities and locals in traditional costume – the Pont-Aven dresses and hats are regarded as Brittany’s most attractive.

Not far from Pont-Aven is a labyrinth, a mini farm and outdoor games. There are a number of large labyrinths here, some permanent and some with a different theme every year with actors wondering through them in character, according to the theme. In 2016 the theme was Alice in Wonderland.

Approximately a 50minute drive from Chinalakes you will find Nêvez. The little peninsula of Névez lies in a beautiful spot between Pont-Aven and Concarneau. In this pretty corner of southern Finistère you’ll find some stunning examples of houses built from pillars of stone, beautiful beaches, enchanting inlets and harbours nestling deep in submerged river valleys (rias). It’s easy to reach, but it’s like a different world!
Concarneau is about a 50 minute drive from Chinalakes. As well as being France’s third most important fishing port, Concarneau has other assets that make it a very popular summer resort. The main draw is the quaint ville close (walled town) followed by some lovely sandy beaches and a lively maritime festival in August.
